New Chronology / Voiceover for Chapter 2 / The Pet Shop Boys / Last Chapter WIP

I have reconfigured the scenes to fit better with argument/presentation text… Still don’t know what time to show Mies, though!

I think the pet shop boys’ suburbia song fits well with chapter 3, since people will grow tired to listen to my voice all the time.

… will try to have the entire voiceover kind of done by tomorrow… as well as working on chapter 5.

There still are tons of mistakes in the transitions etc… feels like you fix one thing, another gets screwed up! (-_-)

400 Words Statement – Breaking the 4th Wall

The factory is not a space, but a condition, which adapts to its surrounding and appropriates it in the favour of productive forces.

While the factory produces a mishmash of personal data, individual opinions and self-regarding narratives (content), it is the byproduct – or context – that establishes its identity.

This byproduct is the eternal presence of labour in all aspects of life – but especially in our homes.

Whereas in preindustrial societies household and domestic realm used to be the primary site of labour and production, factories divided this spatial proximity due to their increasing scale and intensity of work.

As a result of this an alienation between the two conditions took place, which turned home into a commodity and artificially constructed image of retreat.

Today, we have entered a state, which combines a new spatial proximity of work and domesticity with the efficiency of the assembly line.

This proximity does not remain within the entity of a fixed place or program, but rather travels with the worker and his or hers individual as well as collective pursuits.

The factory therefore acts as an amplifier just as much as a mediator between the two poles of domestic privacy and a connected workforce, by constantly inverting the same space according to its changing requirements.

Yet, each inversion the mechanical system produces is related to a different mode of work; may it be physical or digital.

The worker, who is also the sole inhabitant of his own micro-factory-unit simply oscillates/commutes between a narcissistic self-observation (mirror) and an infinite public network of peer workers – all within the confined interiority of the room.

It is only the in-between or junk-TIME, or in the collapse of the entire system, that the worker finds retreat from the latter.

The factory re-animates the ruins of the former houses, dwellings and homes and turns them into an integral part of the globalised production circle by exceeding the modernist notion of being merely product.

By looking at the process of inverting space according to its mode of production – rather than the factories actual site or product – the project seeks to take root in the idea of a baroque functionalism.

Functionalist, because the factory follows a strict dictate of efficiency and rationalisation in its goals of production – baroque due to their high frequency of changing set-ups, which create a condition of excess and movement if read in time (film).

Work/Home History Intro (in progress)

these are just the first 15 secs; still lacking text and explanation. they show the weaver/watchmakers traditional ‘topshop’ – the highest floor in the building with extra large ceilings for long sunlight. Hope to be able to let the elevation/section blend into the my previous ‘long section’.

3D – Print tests






I am not quite satisfied with the Makerbot version, so doing another test with the plastery printer… this one looks too plastic; especially to in comparison to the white plaster base.

I am almost disgusted from how happy it looks… good motivation to do the work-version even dirtier!!! Shadows and objects are still missing atm. I was thinking to animate the 2 versions so as it inside turns out one sees the gradual work-retreat transformation.

Unfortunately the old diamond plan didnt work with the accurate rotation, so now the plot had to become even bigger… the maze as a garden theme can decrease in height towards the centre to give space to the walls… but still needs to be worked on…

The new Plan is taking ages… its more or less trial and error with either shape of the courtyards.. think i have found a slightly more elegant solution in which the curved shapes “lock into each other”. additionally the wall now has got an outlook; similarly to the ones of mazes in order to see the bigger picture/orientate oneself. hope to have a first version of that rotation landscaping by later.

Update Axo/Baroque Pleasure Garden

for now the garden is only a representation of what needs to be worked out in plan first… I like the idea of a baroque garden, in which hedges and bushes are  constantly maintained to – not only formally but literally – suit the inversion process without obstructing it. the plants and sculptures could create maze like structures, which are normally found in pleasure gardens; a typology I think I need when I talk about the retreat from the factory. The large mirror box surrounding it amplifies this effect even further.

trying to define different drawing approaches for the different ‘worlds’. sectional perspective cuts now also through another layer of reflective wall which – in an angle that the inhabitant cannot see himself – is surrounding the first box and multiplies a garden-like retreat space. so box is put into a new box… (-_-)

Courtyard Plan & Internalised Domestic Loop

Plan of factory/production courtyard with domestic loop wrapped around it; all rooms share a specific relationship with the wall/yard.
I am now working on the transformation diagram and the internalised plan… The space in the middle of image 2 is kind of a left-over space atm but will have to function more “purposefully un-useful”. I am not sure how to draw each rooms work/retreat polarity (apart from representing it with furniture)… maybe it would work better with not just a single flat but with a number of them that wrap around the core..?

As each room shares at least one wall with the courtyard/garden/production space, i am trying to define the different kinds of openings they could have. For instance the kitchen has a pass-through window for food; the corridor also acts as a gallery on tracks which can extend into the yard; the gym shares a rotating wall with a middle hinge, so the the reflective surface of the yards inside can be utilised for the inhabitants narcissistic self-examination during workout… etc

Klein Bottle Sections


Still not sure how to incorporate this exactly but these are from the nat. hist. museum and show how the klein bottles section consists of a moebius strips. By ‘wrapping’ my program around a larger studio space, the staircase could become the moment of the shifting plane..

Ritualised Space Versus Flexibility

Dwelling as well as production spaces share an ever-increasing need for spatial and programatic flexibility. However, as production is also adapting to this principle, one could argue, that the concept of domesticity remains dependent on home as a space of ritual.

The home of the future must therefore be able to do both: allow for a rigours ritual programming as well as immediate flexibility. In the typical suburban house this differentiation is already been made between garage/shed and domestic spaces.

If the garage (without cars but many cool tools) became core of the house with all other program wrapped around it, the house could eventually facilitate two interlacing modes of inhabitation, which occasionally cross or even happen in the very same space…

I cut together some scenes I recored yesterday… unfortunately I did not get all of them (plus some are terribly shaky) so I am not sure if I can actually complete the circle I sketched out in the script! Natasha (or anyone else): would you recommend to keep working on the video as long as possible, or alternatively draw the conceptional diagram of how the loop is supposed to work??

of course i will keep on editing the movie anyway, but its a bid of a time issue to make it pretty…

My initial attempt to use the mirror-box i already had turned out not to suit the transformation i am testing now… will have to get entirely new mirrors, which are not squared.

Aim is to surround the non-reflective side of them with interior sections, which turn into a whole when the relationship is inverted.
