The Continuum

Common threads through the 6 different projects.

Connection 1: Comparison- contrast – αντιπαραβολή – The notions of the Extreme

Most of the projects in order to highlight (explain) their point they use as an example the exact opposite.i.e

1.In the case of the ‘’kitchen debate’’ Nixon and Khrushchev hold exhibits in each other’s countries as a cultural exchange. In order for the American to promote capitalism they hold an exhibition in the Soviet Union in Moscow and vs. The soviets hold exhibition in NY. They use as a platform to promote their political beliefs, location that has the exact opposite beliefs.

(American exhibitionà in the communist Soviet union and

the Soviet Union Exhibitionà in New York.

2A In the case of Andy Warhol: instead of using paint to draw, he does exactly the opposite , he destroys painting in order to draw. The urine destroys the copper-paint-background because of the oxidation reaction.

2B.Also the urine is something that our body eliminates. It is something that the body wants to get rid of and don’t be part of our body- system. Andy instead uses it to create portraits. A Portrait is something that is directly connected with our identity. Something that stays with us forever (identity) is defined by something that does not stay with us forever. (urine).

3A.In the case of the Six memos of the next millennium Calvino describes lightness through heaviness. He explains that he is often concerned with subtracting weight from stories and language in order to succeed lightness. Quickness is the ability of a writer to control the speed of the story.

3B.Calvino introduces his own personal motto and emblem ‘’Festina Lente (Hurry Slowly)’’which coincides with Quickness.

3C. On visibility Calvino says that in a world where visuals and images dominate, our words need to be vivid to gain attention. He uses the word opposite to the image.

3D.On Multiplicity Calvino talks about a world of systems, where each system within the system, conditions the others and is conditioned by the other systems.

In this world of systems there is an inability to find an ending, as each system leads onto another. Here we have a constant exchange between the one and the other system.

(This is a concept that suits to every example of the 6 projects, in order to have i.e communism vs capitalism, positive vs negative. For a positive thing to exist there needs to be a negative thing. So there is a constant ‘’exchange between the different systems)

4.In the case of FAT: they engineered their own death as a means for reinvention, as a means for a new start, a new beginning.

5A.In the case of the 2029, The network applies at the AA diploma school (4thyear), they got rejected and in order for them to continue at the AA they accept the offer for 3rd year. Acceptance vs.Rejection.

5B. Regarding the moment of ‘’singularity’’ ( the moment when robots and humans become one. We need to accept that in order for the human race to evolve we need to accept the opposite (technology) and become one.

6A. In the case of the 3D printer we put in contradiction the conventional (traditional way of construction vs the 3D printer technology.

6B. Also in some types of 3d printers in order to have an object 3d printed (positive volume) you need to have the negative volume before.

(Positive volume vs Negative.)

Connection 2: Time of the event present but refers towards the future

The protagonists exist in their present time but they refer always to the future.

1.In the case of the kitchen debate Nixon refers to the present period of time how the Typical American House is. Where Khrushchev looks at the exhibition as something that Soviets will have at the future as well.

2.When Andy Warhol made his painting they were extreme and he didn’t have good reviews for piss paintings. In the future though this changed.

He also refers to a future were painting would not need to be the tool to paint – draw but the exact opposite. He challenges what painting is or could be in the future.

3.The memos are lectures on the values of literature which Calvino felt were important for the coming millennium.

4.FAT uses death as a form of reinvention. According to FAT the architect needs to ‘’die’’ at the present moment in order to move forward to the future and find new ideas that will make architecture again meaningful.

Successful architects in the future will not be architects at all.

5.The fact that we are discussing it now and referring to the future.

6.The fact that we are discussing it now and referring to the future.

Connection 3: The future Audience

As a result all of them may not refer to the audience at their present time but the future audiences. ( the present audiences might not understand )

  1. Soviets in the future.
  2. Painting in the future
  3. Writers in the future
  4. Architects in the future
  5. Humans in the future.
  6. Construction method in the future.

Connection 4: Form of destruction and ‘’death’’.

  1. Nixon was the only president of the united states who resign.
  2. Oxidation
  3. Calvino died and he never wrote the last chapter of his lecture
  4. Fat engineered their death as a for of reinvention
  5. Human race will change to something else.
  6. Traditional construction (scaffolding) method dies and 3D printer takes over.

Connection 5: Personal perspectives

Different opinions and perspectives (subjective opinions)

  1. Kitchen debate each leader represents a different belief. Nixons perspective on communism and Khrushchev perspective on capitalism.
  2. Andy’s perspective on self-portraits.
  3. Calvino’s perspective on literature in the future.
  4. FAT’s Perspective on the future Architect.
  5. Panels perspective on the Network and Ray Kurzweil on singularity
  6. Our perspective on construction
  • The concept of perspectives is directly connected with the comparisons and notions of extreme. We must look at things from a different perspective (To look at the extreme in order to work towards the other extreme).

Connection 6: Different type of recording of the event.

  1. Recorded on TV
  2. Recorded on canvas.
  3. Recorded on book.
  4. Recorded on article.
  5. Recorded in the present (it’s a prediction)
  6. Recorded in the present (it’s a prediction)

Connection 7: Protagonist- artifact- space of the event

  1. Nixon, Khrushchev – Debate – Kitchen
  2. Andy, Hugo, Cutronie – piss paintings – The Factory
  3. Calvino – Book (lectures) – Auditorium
  4. FAT –                           -
  5. Network – Portfolio- Diploma Studio
  6. 3D Printer – City – Rhino space.
