which one should i print for the totem frame?

taking too much time playing with colours… argh disgusting!! 3d is way harder..i want illustrator back!
ok this has been a most exciting day cuz i managed to figure out this 3d animation stuff. So here is what i am imagining for the film animation.
After PART I – IDENTITY (Recon edited movie) we end at the “THE MIRROR IS THE FACTORY” statement.
PART II – FACTORY starts with this sequence (click to play)
The 2 sided mirror spins to reveal the 2 worlds and the 3rd world (the reflection), then the mirror thickens to then be “opened” and reveal the factory inside.
After this i ll problably zoom in to the factory and then go through the machines and explain how it works both in terms of perception and the real construction (TS)
Oh i wish i had this done last sunday!!!!
still modelling the factory… gave it walls. For now it lives in a cube space (i guess the cube makes sense cuz all parts of the factory move in a cube diagonal to construct the iso view…)
also figured out how to start the video for the PART II – THE FACTORY (upload tomorrow)
So my goal today is to model as much as possible and make the animation tomorrow. Hopefully will do some text work later today
ok back to rhino
as exciting as when i made smoke !
need to make it move now and fix some bits here and there…and fill up the containers with water too… thats gonna be hard i think
Click to watch
This is a quick test of animation showing the broken view into iso. It will be possibly just line drawing and the coloured once it is in ISO. i dont know… testing stuff
Also some TS book action, tracing etc
made a bunch of tests with the lenses device. some interesting results. Im processing all the images now, cropping etc and will bring them printed tomorrow.
here’s a preview
if we account for the fact that this is assembled by hand…it works pretty well.. no?
i predict that setting up a camera for this will be painful !!
Yesterday i spent the day making these models.
I will finish today and hopefully get a slot in the photo studio for some filming/photo with proper light.
For this to work i need the most amazing even light possible so i dont get shadows / revel the construction of the iso.
Also now I set up a new file for the factory model where all parts match in scale.
here some images

(UPLOADING ON VIMEO WILL UPDATE SOON)
This is a new version of the recon movie and the start of the new video that i am making for the jury.
Here is the script as it is now. PART II is work in progress
Quick update on what’s cooking:
I ve edited the recon movie (surprisingly i couldn’t cut as much as i wanted) but the last part of the movie needs to be reworked to launch the project.
Also fixed the text to go with the new edit, that i will record and put over later today and leave it to render over night.
It is looking like the new video will be about 10-11 min long to include all new stuff.
Edited version + Storyboard + Text will be up by the end of tomorrow to discuss on tuesday.
Happy working everyone
UPDATE 2: Editing in after effects now. Any comments? I m thinking this will be the transition from the recon animation to the project statement and the factory/identity thesis.
UPDATE: Fixed a few things, click to watch
I have been planning the coming jury and I have decided that i will have :
1) The animation
2) 4 big drawings ( cindy city drawing, 2 sides of the mirror drawing, TS isometric illusion drawing and the factory drawing (this last one will be whatever i have modeled by the day of the jury)
3) The Selfies printed/mounted etc
4) The props (mirror, selfie stick, camera bla bla bla) AND THE TS MODELS! forgot about it for a second
5) Selfies/white book, TS book (on the side in case its needed)
That said I have started storyboarding the animation which will be the edited recon + what s been developed so far. (tomorrow will be all day editing the recon so i will upload the final edit by the end of the day and we can discuss it + storyboard on tuesday)
I have started this render (click to watch) that will establish the 3 worlds of the project: The real, The constructed and the Tainted reality (i really like the tainted word.. :D)
The colours on the render can change (i will see depending on the over all look of the animation) and i need to fix the ‘seams’ where the sphere meets the mirror so its nicer. But anyway i will put this on after effects now and keep going. Oh also i need to make the reflected bit of the sphere slightly different (tinted… :P)
Here s the dwg as it is for tut tomorrow. Need to put some hours on TS book now.
it s a bit bonkers but i am sure it will eventually make sense
also left the selfie stick sort of hanging in the corner there…not sure where to put it…ah well. tomorrow is another day
UPDATE: moving along….hopefully will have a coloured version + intro text by later today
tomorrow is TS
here s a snapshot of a work in progress dwg. This will be the ‘statement drawing’ to set up the two worlds of the construction of the real architecture on one side of the mirror and the construction of the image on the other side of the mirror.
I had to make quick decisions on how to draw and after fiddling with a perspective view i gave up to go back to the ISO. It makes sense within the project so no time for hesitation!!
a lot can be discussed about the 2 parts of the drawing:
– the real side will be more grey scale-ish / the image side more colourful (Cindy city style)
– the real site will be a sort of construction site with crane/building/machines/bricks etc / the image side is sort of inside the computer/camera/image editing software/printer world factory like
also back to flat drawing cuz gotta get this out fast to give time for TS and models
PS: I will do my best to mirror the both sides. for example i have a crane on one side so there will a mirrored crane on the other side. but instead of a software icon there will be a building brick or somethig…get it?
been doing ts the last couple of days. Focusing on cloaking devices. at the moment setting up tests for cloaking with lenses (sorta done but needs work) with water and mirrors.
All scattered but i will be put together and printed for tomorrow. Also i m very excited cuz i think i will have an escher esque water fall in the factory!! wohoo
I ve been digging about the cloaking device with the lenses and trying to find out what went wrong with the first test i did.
I thought it could have been a mistake calculating the separation between lenses …but it wasn’t… I am guessing at this point that it is the lenses I got… i used 2 types of lenses: one with F500mm and the other F100mm.
The guys that developed this system used F200mm and F75mm…so maybe that’s my next step…getting those lenses… even though they say it could be done with any lens as long as you follow the proportions… ah anyway…keep going, right?
I am trying to finish the million spreads i have thrown in the indesign so i can start the term with the precedents done and all tidy. (hopefully….)
comments welcome… the Selfie bits are still a bit all over the place…writing now on post production (filters etc) and sharing. Update on that later
But it is starting to make sense in my head and less scary
Tomorrow is TS day!
I have forced myself to start writing. I am currently (and have been) overwhelmed by my own project – i just can’t grasp it. Unlike Oliver, one day of ‘writing’ turns out to be less than an A4 page but it’s a start.
Hoping to do some proper TS this week and get my factory model going. Will try to post daily to get things going.
These images were an april fools prank made by SAP (society of architecture photography)
Disclaimer: Some selfie sticks were harmed in the making of these images.
(if anyone is reading the blog.. what should i do about the vertical images? keep them as they are? reformat? delete?….)
Test 1 of cloaking device with lenses of 100 and 500 focal lenght.
Doesnt work with this combination of lenses.
Need to dig deeper to find out which lenses were proved to work.
UPDATE: TS overview of assembly line and control tower. Got to run to tutorial with javier. will keep updating later
Ok, for tomorrow I am trying to organise all my scattered thoughts/models/ideas into one ‘drawing’ that lays out the factory. There are 2 parts: the factory floor (city) where we have the assembly line and the control tower (lets call it that for now) that has to do with how we view the factory.
Disclaimer: this said ‘drawing’ is an illustration of an idea for presentation purposes. I intend to design and take you through the factory with an animation that will hopefully take some shape over the christmas holiday.
along with the dreaded selfie stick i am bringing ‘analog filters’ to Berlin…
fun making gradients but now is back to the assembly line….
ohhh modelling a roller coaster wheel thingy for the factory flips!
Beginning of the erase room. I hope the drawing is clear but:
Subject enters the ‘erasure room’ via ISO view and the image is captured in Elevation view (where the camera is placed…duh)
PS: this is a part of the big factory model. It is not mean to have the annotations. these are for ts purposes.
Tidying up the TS precedents according to the movement type.
waiting for lenses to arrive
i’m hoping to have 2 moments of the factory drawn/modeled for tomorrow at least:
1- the film flipping
2- the erase room
and a couple of clear sentences explaining the factory because i have TS tut with Evan tomorrow and i need to explain it well!
After some calculations and buying some lenses I got the dimensions for the invisibility cloak apparatus and guess what…. it s 2 meters long for a 50 mm lens!
Good thing my factory is turning into a city.
So here s a photo (sorry for bad quality) of the structure to test the lenses. hopefully they will arrive monday or tuesday so i can start erasing stuff!
Ah in the mean time i have an idea for a photoshop/intagram room where you can add filters to your image. update on that later.
Update on TS: I had a “duh” moment after so much of moving things around in the 3d model to figure out the ‘ratio’ at which the pieces had to be displaced to create the echer ilusion… basically they have o move the same distance in all 3 axis… which means it moves on a cube diagonal.
i should have guessed earlier since echer was a mathematician and all…
Here is Ts table of contents and the basic assembly like track movements i will be exploring to make the factory work.
Click to watch: made a quick test in cinema4D of the movements just to see how it works. Later once the factory model has some moments well designed enough i will animate them!
I think i made a little mistake BUT this helped a lot to figure out my factory model and how to do it!
ohhhh totally want my factory model to be like this!

Spreads on this case study coming later
1.30 am on a saturday …. finished PP
HTS is pretty much there but needs to be edited.
Tomorrow is TS/unit all day.
Trying to make this model more deliberate and less representational.
Finally modeled a city… couldn’t bear those sketchup meshes anymore.
The moments of inversion/mirror/ reflection happen in the ISO view. In a escher like illusion moment.
The building is the image maker – where the image gets processed. The city and the rooms become the subjects of identity making.
1. fix the scale! Everything must work in a scaled-coherent world even if i have a factory the size of a city.
2. Add detail. Doors, mirrors, roads, stairs. Design the connections. Whats a conveyor belt, what s a road?
3. Do TS precedent spreads on : Escher, Pompidou, Columns.
4. focus on the PROPS – performative props, identity props. Superficial vs structural props (in the construction of the image) physical props vs narrative prop … etc etc
Fun times. Sleep now.
Here s the state of the white book. Still loads to do but i will go back to drawing the factory for a bit.
Also will dedicate some of today to hts and hopefully develop the props section of the book.
wohoo tuesday night tracing fun !! (Sabrina wanna be my tracing assistant?)
This if for the first section of my Ts on ‘Seeing devices’ where i layout the devices that pretty much mimic the human eye. Starting with the eye, camera obscura and camera lucida, analog camera and then digital.
After will be optics (general rules) and reflection. Then “how mirrors are made” from the silvering of glass to a prism which acts as a mirror. ok? enough – first spreads coming next tut
finally… I am using the blog as a motivator. I want to post as much as possible to see the evolution of the work. It’s been quite helpful so i will keep using it like this. Also works a bit like a to do list.
tomorrow i will develop further the model but also i want to look a bit into the prosthetic and the idea of the humans becoming the prop in the assembly of the space/architecture identity.
I realised after my last update that i was forgetting my aspect ratio format. So here it is HDTV format and a bit more detail. Not sure im ready to colour but i really want to!!
still modelling but here s a print screen update. Adding details now to illustrate the process of the assembly of identity. This scene is inside a bigger mirror….
it will make sense tomorrow i promisse.
GOD! I havent modeled in agessssss. factory coming along. getting more clear as i go …
Here is an update on the book. Table of contents is as bellow. These are the main parts of the recon video. I think these will be compressed into a chapter once the book and the project develop further.
at the moment I am laying out the book just as stills from the recon movie. It gets pretty tricky specially when I get to the slow motion moving stills.
But again, it can be discussed and chanced as I move forward.
Also started to draw/3d model the factory. I have an idea in mind but i can’t explain it now. Here is a printscreen. I am hoping to sort out the main line drawing by tonight so I can go to illustrator tomorrow and put some colour in it. I decided to keep the iso as a way to draw. Colour schemes will most likely change for this drawing as there will be a lot of lenses and mirrors so it will be very blue ish i think.
And… (natasha will love this) …. I want to model this factory after i draw it. Dont know when or how but i have a feeling this can start the TS.
Except for Miruna and Anny who know the location of the minion (sorry girls) Whoever finds it first gets candy! no joke! Next tutorial
Click to re-watch! I fixed a couple of glitches but still miles away from perfection.
I will be updating the blog through the weekend as I am setting up a bunch of things at the same time: Factory drawing, white book, TS spreads w/ precedents on mirrors/cameras
Post sleep and post recon meditation notes and references:
– The process = product only applies to the human (as per Javier)
– Look at John Soane’s house and the use of mirrors in it (i ve been there but dont remebember how they work)
– Juliet from foundation wrote an article on ebay mirrors. need to find that
– an important word that came up was “control” : control in the use of mirrors, its accuracy. The mirror is not always controled.
-Ilusion/fantasy – the truth or non truth of the mirror – mistruth – the reflection is not real
– Everyone agreed i have to go in the mirror. Draw the section
– Mirror as translation – speculative and not real
– Feminism: define it and have an opinion about it. Dont be scared – however also important that Cindy had no feminist agenda when doind the film stills. The feminist association is a reading done by others
– The large and Xlarge props need to be addressed
– whats the purpose of the drawing style i chose? Why iso? why the colours? Tak mentioned the clash between Cindy and me.
– Maybe make animation of factory slower – the animated stills were all slow and about the few moments before and after the click – maybe bring that in to the factory
Ok quite a lot to go through!
First of all i wanna have a go at this mirror factory section. Sketch for tutes on friday. Will start tomorrow. Today was recovery day.
Ok, I declare this drawing finished for now (as in for tuesday)
Need to finish animating it and can’t keep changing it so there: layers merged and all.
back to After effects
Updating the update: all colouring is done for now. On to the text
yeah…so I didnt finish last night as i was hoping…. but i am almost done with the colouring.
Started to add some references like the vermeer, velazquez. Made some ‘safety signs’ for the identity factory… will be adding all the ‘cindies’ soon!
Text coming later
Animation all weekend…no time to sleep!
Made this intro…it was meant to be just for fun but i like it
Click to play
also see below inspiration for animating my iso factory drawing:
and a little update on the drawing… I will finish it today. no matter what!!!! Text to be uploaded tomorrow.
omgggggg….when will it end?
PS: let me know if u have comments or ideas to add to the cindy/cat factory!
who said colouring cranes was fun?!
that city needs some windows…need floors for the rooms…now drawing my room/bathroom
it’s gonna be a loonnngggg day.
a little update on the ISO factory drawing…
Hope to finish it by tomorrow night so i can animate on monday.
SO, just an update of all things in production
1) Isometric drawing of the cindy process factory, before the photo, making the photo, the photo, the selling of the photo etc… this drawing will be coloured and animated with voice over in the filnal movie.
4)Text and graphic frames for the film to have voice over project statement bla bla bla
following the mirror animation it will slowly zoom out to the moment of production.
currently patiently painting the line drawing to be the cindy factory. I can’t explain why i am doing this kind of drawing but i really want to work with animated flat drawing.
Kinda worried about that lack of the bottom part of the cindy image… any ideas ? I could fake it but i m not that good with photoshopping missing limbs.
Anyway i am doing my own photos tonight to add to the recon film. I might attempt a similar shot to overlay.
still hopefully working towards a mock of film of the storyboard!!
bye for now
Oh and my new profile pic should be this
Ok so storyboard about 70% done. I am a bit stuck on how to begin and how to end. So for now i am doing the frames that i already sketched and starting to stitch the bits and bobs together.
I ll have a mock up film of this for tuesday so we can discuss the missing bits.
Back to after effects.
Ps: i am considering having the physical props at the jury. I have the ‘mirror’, ‘camera’ and the ‘wig’. Need to figure out the ‘room’, ‘furniture’ and the ‘city’.
pps: Oh and i made it a 10min video cuz better to have to cut than to add at the last minute
ppps: I created an account on vimeo cuz the final renders of my animations are turning out very large files and impossible to upload here. Here is my profile link http://vimeo.com/catsampaio
I am updating the videos as they render. Any comments welcome:
Drawing the props… the room for now is the cindy room and the city is soho nyc.
The key idea is the scale of the props in construction the identity.
yesterday’s tutorial is starting to make sense. Will update once i fill in all the gaps.
dont mind my doodles…
the driving statements for the film:
Identity is an imaginary construct
Identity is constructed through performance
Identity is constructed in the mirror
Identity is performed in space(context)
The props build the context
How does the context affect the process of constructing identity?
How to design your identity?
The factory of selves: Identity is Image
Here is the plan for the recon. A bit late but i m still figuring a lot of stuff out.
Following the conversation on tuesday i decided that my untitled film exists in 3 worlds (for now at least…) These are not to be presented in order necessarily but ‘world 3′ is the one that launches the project.
To be discussed tomorrow but comments welcome
Still working on statement/film script …will post it soon!
But for now i leave you with my new look:
I MADE SMOKEEEEE!
Click Click! (it will all be slow-mo obvi!)
i think i had an idea about where the movie zoom goes after the moving still, the cindy room and my studio.. i need another tutorial!
Update2: cindy lighting her cigarette
Update: drawing outside the frame. There’s some meta coming to this film.
Not sure how to render this. Kinda wanna make it colourful and saturated. ALmost like we zoom out of the film still and are ‘transported’ to her studio. YES? yes
not sure about perspective or anything at the moment, just setting up the idea.
I m liking these video posts.
Click to play. Cindy in the library. Now trying to make her light a cigarette.
“A woman looking in the mirror caught in the act of constructing her identity”
I read this somewhere and this immediately made sense in relation to Cindy’s “untitled film stills”
It is true for her process of making a photo, it is true for herself, for the character in the photo and for me and I bet, everyone else.
The idea of identity being an imaginary construct and being assembled by the individual in a cultural context is stuck in my head. What i mean is: the same way I construct my identity everyday to perform in the spectacle of life (how dramatic…i know); Cindy does it in 2 parallel streams: her ‘true’ self (as in the one she chooses to be) and the multitude of other identities she invents.
I tried to layout the factory but doing this some questions came up that i am not sure about. If I establish that the space of assembly is the ‘room’ , the tools are the camera, mirror, and backdrop. The various combinations of props are the input and the image/Identity is the output.
Who/What is Cindy in the process?
Is she part of the input? yes.
Is she part of the assembly line (as in, another tool like the camera)? yes
Is she part of the output? No (?)
Now the other issue is the untitleness of the output. Can identity be identityless?
I m going to let this marinate for a bit while i animate some more Cindies and update later. In the mean time, comments, ideas, opinions, all welcome.
ps: also building the storyboard … Malraux style
Click to play. duh
I’ve been looking for a tutorial like this –> CLICK
Moving still images.
Ok i’m gonna make cindy dance! Hopefully test one will be up here later, or tutes tomorrow !
I am venturing into the idea of the Cindy identity factory. I am working on a few things that i need to test out and get out of my system.
This stop motion is just the beginning of stitching all of Cindy’s stills into one movie a la Chris Maker (La Jetee).
I m considering re ordering them to form different narratives, add sound and or captions. Add fake images (if Sabrina let s me use some of hers, some of James franco…some of me?)
I don’t know. It got me thinking about Identity Theft. They way we speak about identity makes if precious at all levels. But in fact, an identity thief seeks anonymity, and not the new identity.
Also, is the individual photograph/character the product or is the series the product?
I shall test both and see what happens.
Bye and click
PS: GO WATCH “TIM’S VERMEER” – mind blown.
Tidying up all the reading I’ve been doing on Cindy.
Organising thoughts. Updating drawing.
